Over the years, we have had the pleasure of training a number of young engineers just starting out in their careers, many of whom have continued to work with Abergeldie. For example, our very own Jonathan Sisovic, Construction Manager, joined Abergeldie as a Graduate Engineer many years ago and is today working on major water infrastructure projects in NSW. We wanted to learn more about our undergraduates’ experience so we sat down with Thomas Bouvy who joined Abergeldie in 2018 in our 12-week vacation program and upon completing his degree, assumed the position of Graduate Engineer. This is Tom’s story.
Tom joined Abergeldie as part of our undergraduate vacation program after meeting our People and Culture Team during the University of Sydney Careers Fair in 2018 when he was completing a double degree in civil engineering and project management.

Commencing his 12-week placement with the Rehabilitation team at Regents Park Office, Tom learned about sewer rehabilitation processes under the mentorship of Project Manager and Abergeldie-Veteran, Dusty Griffin. For the duration of his placement, Tom and Dusty worked closely together on pricing projects and developing schedules while attending construction sites on a regular basis to put Tom’s new skills into practice. As a result, Tom gained a versatile experience working on tenders with our pre-contracts (tendering) team and communicating with a diverse group of engineers across the many other divisions within Abergeldie.
Tom continued to work with the Rehabilitation team two days a week after completing his placement while undertaking his final year at university. During this time, Tom continued to combine his theoretical education his ongoing practical experience, which helped him gain hands-on experience in delivering high quality projects safely. Most notably, Tom played an important role during the Aqueduct project for Sydney Water in 2018, working in and around heritage listed water supply pipes.

Tom’s story doesn’t end there. His utmost dedication to learn and to hone his skills unsurprisingly earned him Graduate Engineer role with Abergeldie upon completing his studies. As an integral part of the team, Tom continues to foster a collaborative culture by helping where help is needed – whether it’s in the office, onsite or with Abergeldie’s mission to build better communities by participating in events such as the 2019 Oxfam Trailwalker Challenge.

Most members of the Abergeldie family would share the same story of how success is a direct result of keeping an open mind with a strong will to learn and collaborate. Over the years, we have had the pleasure of welcoming a number of undergraduates as part of our vacation program and graduate engineers, many of whom have grown into senior positions within Abergeldie. We are excited to see where Tom’s career takes him next!
