Rural Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrades

Abergeldie has worked collaboratively with Urban Utilities to deliver various Rural Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrades in Regional Queensland. The package involved design and construction, for a program of civil and process upgrade works at eight sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the regions to the south and west of Brisbane. The program was administered as a single contract.

The broad objectives of the program were to ensure compliance with current codes, standards and regulations, to provide additional capacity to cater for future population grown and, where possible, to standardise equipment and systems across the eight plants to simplify operations and maintenance arrangements.

Remove concrete wave walls

Boonah STP

Surface drainage upgrades, new channels between inlet works and Imhoff tanks, replace degraded pipework, desludging of existing lagoons and install geofabric and rock stabilisation.

Complexity

Works at all sites were carried out under brownfield conditions in close coordination with the plants’ operations and maintenance teams.

In the absence of detailed as-built drawings for many of the older elements of the existing plants, extensive design verification was necessary to ensure that the new elements would tie in smoothly with the existing STP systems.

The four new inlet works were constructed and mounted on skids offsite, which reduced on-site installation time, minimised disruption to normal plant operations and reduced the risk of equipment/pipework misalignments during installation.

A temporary gravity bypass of the inlet works was installed at the Gatton STP to allow a cut, as the plant operators were unable to isolate the rising main.
