The Civil Contractors Federation Earth Awards hosted last month in Sydney saw Abergeldie receive an award in Category 4 for the Schofields Road Upgrade Stage 1. The project was carried out by the OHL- Abergeldie Joint Venture for Transport for NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), as the first of three project stages to meet future transport needs of the North West Growth Centre and to link the Rouse Hill and Marsden Park town centres.
This is the second award that the project has won, the first being the 2014 Roads and Maritime Services Construction Quality Award (Category 1) for the stringent QA and innovations implemented on the project, particularly during the bridge installation works.
The works upgraded a 2.1 km stretch of Schofields Road, between its intersections with Windsor Road at Rouse Hill and Tallawong Road at Schofields in western Sydney, replacing the existing two lane road and creek crossing with a four lane dual carriageway and two new, 53.2m long, three span, twin road bridges.
Related works included: realigning Tallawong Road, Cudgegong Road, and The Ponds Boulevard at their intersections with the new dual carriageway to accommodate future construction of the North West Rail Link; installing new traffic signals at the intersections of the new road and three cross streets; construction of a cycleway; landscaping; street lighting; signage; and relocation of multiple buried and overhead services, including gas, electricity, telecommunications, NBN cabling, water, sewerage and drainage.
Bulk and detailed earthworks were complex and included the construction of an extensive soil nail wall to stabilise the face of a deep cutting which could not be battered because of the proximity of sensitive private property.
Staging, traffic management, community liaison and coordination of works with the owners of buried and overhead service lines were complex, planned in detail, and executed very effectively.
A big THANK YOU goes out to the project team who put in a big effort and continuously ‘thought outside the box’ to improve the project outcomes and quality.
