Eastern Suburbs Railway Track Renewal

Sydney Trains engaged Abergeldie to complete the Eastern Suburbs Railway Track Renewal Project to upgrade the rail infrastructure between highly used commuter stations Martin Place and Town Hall. The project involved the removal and replacement of resilient rail plate and fasteners along 225m of floating track slab install within the tunnels of the Eastern Suburbs Railway. The works were contracted under a Sydney Trains Master Services Agreement (MSA) for civil, geotechnical and track works in the rail corridor.

Scope of Works

Installation of temporary water, lighting and ventilation
Temporary encapsulation of platforms to control dust
Supply of baseplates, jewelleries and HDPE packers
Installation of Delkor Egg RF167 plates and fasteners onto the floating track slab
Raising the level of train stops within the scope area to match the adjacent rail
Anti-cracking cutting and grouting of cross-drains
Assessment of the integrity of the timber sleepers and replacement or repair as required

Complexity

The works were carried out within the rail tunnels, requiring careful attention to ventilation and lighting. The inner-city location (underground, immediately beneath the Theatre Royal building) greatly restricted access and the availability of space for materials and equipment.

The Abergeldie project team worked collaboratively with Sydney Trains to deliver the project to a high standard with a strong focus on preplanning the works for seamless delivery.

Community Benefits

The Eastern Suburbs Railway is operated by Sydney Trains and has stations at Martin Place, Kings Cross, Edgecliff and Bondi Junction. Its infrastructure critical to the inner-city of Sydney and its incredibly high volume of commuters, the railway line also received an Engineering Heritage plaque from Engineers Australia to signify its cultural significance. The track renewal delivered by Abergeldie was critical ongoing maintenance works to ensure the continued operation of the popular Eastern Suburbs Railway.
