Allawah Rail Overbridge Replacement

Abergeldie collaborated with Sydney Trains to deliver the Allawah Rail Overbridge Replacement project, after extensive consultation with community groups. The increased capacity of the replacement bridge reduced traffic congestion in the area, making public roads safer for pedestrians and motorists. The project was named a finalist in the CCF NSW Earth Award 2018.

Scope of Works

Temporary traffic management planning and implementation, including road detours.
Demolition of existing bridge.
Off-site fabrication and on-site installation of 40m long steel bridge girders.
Design and installation of work platform within the live rail corridor, to allow for installation of abutments necessary for single span bridge, including bored piling and FRP concrete works.
Poured in-situ concrete bridge deck.
Relocation of third-party owned utility service lines, including 750mm water main, 150mm domestic water main, 11kV Ausgrid feeder and 240V cables, as well as street lighting and road signage.
Relocation of rail assets within the live rail corridor, including installation of four new OHW STRs.
Construction of new bridge approach road, including road earthworks, retaining walls, pavement, drainage and footpaths.
Compliance with Sydney trains rail safe working requirements, including presence of Rail Protection Officer for all work elements.

Complexity

Some preparatory works outside the Danger Zone were carried out mid-week adjacent to live rail traffic, but the bulk of works could only be carried out during strictly scheduled weekend rail possession conditions.

To take maximum advantage of the limited available time during possessions, works during these periods were programmed on an hour by hour basis and closely supervised to ensure on-time hand-back. Works were completed on budget and ahead of schedule.
