International Women’s Day 2020

Today we celebrate women around the world. International Women’s Day is a day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements  of women and  a day we call to action for women’s equality. This year, we look back at some of the Abergeldie Women who have made a positive dent in the civil engineering industry and look towards a future with more women choosing a STEM path.

CCF President’s Awards (People Awards)

At Abergeldie we work with many women who deserve high praise for their achievements and successes over the years. Many of whom received  finalist spots at the CCF President’s Awards for their dedication to Civil Engineering and achievements in the construction industry, including:

• Angela Andrews, Project Manager (Finalist)
• Paula Myhre, Commercial Manager (Finalist)
• Alicia Tran, Site Engineer (Finalist)

In 2018, we watched excitedly as our very own Isabel Nobre accepted the Project Manager of the Year Award for her longstanding contribution as project manager with Abergeldie. Over the years, Isabel has consistently  delivered high-quality projects across New South Wales in the water sector.  She is, and continues to be, a strong role model to our younger female engineers.

Young Women’s Careers Fair

Last week we also had the pleasure of attending the Young Women’s Career Fair where we welcomed Year 9 and Year 10 Students who will be choosing their subjects for HSE fairly soon. Hosted by CareWays Community, the inaugural event aimed to educate the younger generation about the various career paths in STEM.

It was great to start a conversation with the next generation of possible Civil Engineers with the help of Nicci Wilson, HR Coordinator, and Lillian Simpson, Trainee Engineer – both pictured above.

Women in the Construction Industry

It’s no secret that the construction industry is male dominated. Abergeldie is an equal rights employer that hopes to increase the number of women who chooses a STEM path. We aim to support women who join Abergeldie with mentoring programs, flexible work hours for school pick-ups and “return to work” arrangements  for mothers returning to work from maternity leave.

Julie Leonardi currently works in our tendering team. She joined Abergeldie as a Project Engineer working on our Chalmers Street Substation project. She returned to work from maternity leave in 2019 and we asked her about her experience.

“I am pleased to be part of a great company with a family spirit that tempts to listen and accommodate its employees, which is perfect for women who want to raise a family and have a career.”
