We had much to celebrate in 2019. Most notably, we celebrated 25 years of building better communities. A fantastic milestone for our founders Mick Boyle and Robin Craig as well as the whole of the Abergeldie family. Abergeldie has also been busy celebrating completed projects, starting new projects and celebrating newly awarded contracts.

In April 2019, Abergeldie became 100% owner of NZ Tunnelling and Infrastructure Contractor, Abergeldie Harker which also assumed the name of Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure. This decision came about in order to provide the commercial strength required to deliver New Zealand’s Central Interceptor project, a $1.2 billion, 13km wastewater tunnel stretching from Western Springs to the Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant. Works commenced in May and is expected to be completed in 2025.

Abergeldie will continue to deliver the complex infrastructure projects needed to build better communities via our diverse capabilities in the Water, Bridges, Transport, Underground, Energy and Remediation industry sectors.

Projects Abroad

In 2019, Abergeldie  celebrated the successful completion of the Killeavy Castle Estate restoration project in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. After four years of construction on the A-grade heritage listed building, Killeavy castle has now been converted into a 45 room, 4 Star Hotel and Wellness Centre. The Killeavy Castle Estate project was only one of the major complex infrastructure projects we worked on abroad in 2019. One project closer to home and in New Zealand, was the Central Interceptor project. Ghella Abergeldie Joint Venture and Watercare signed the contract in March 2019 to construct the Central Interceptor, the largest wastewater project in New Zealand. We look forward to celebrating together the successful completion of this milestone project.

Abergeldie Transport Sector

We have seen significant growth in the Abergeldie Transport sector in 2019. Some of the important rail infrastructure projects of the year have been completing the first large scale installation of proprietary Geocell system for Sydney Trains at Adamstown, completing the track formation reconditioning package for Australian Rail Track Association (ARTC) across the Hunter Valley region and beginning construction of both the 500V DC traction systems and Furrer+Frey Retractable OHW system at Auburn Maintenance Centre for Downer EDI Rail Pty Ltd.

Abergeldie Water Sector

In 2019 in the Abergeldie Water sector, we have been focused on completing our largest project to date, the Springvale Mount Piper Water Treatment Facility in Lithgow for Veolia Water Australia. We look forward to celebrating the successful completion of the Water Transfer Scheme and Treatment Facility at the end of the year. Onto other Water projects, our Safety Focused Performance Joint Venture (SFPJV) team have been busy working on a number of projects that form part of the Capital Works Program for Melbourne Water. Earlier this year, in NSW, we successfully completed the Stormwater Aqueducts package for Sydney Water. This Stormwater Aqueducts package consisted of five projects, one being to rehabilitate the heritage listed Tanks stream Aqueduct on Hamilton Street.

Abergeldie Bridges Sector

All of our teams do a great job in delivering projects to the Abergeldie high standard and celebrating the successful completion of these projects together. Another notable project worthy of recognition in our Abergeldie Bridges
sector is the Lansdowne Bridge project in Goulburn for Wollongong City Council which officially opened in August 2019. This Lansdowne Bridge will be a great asset to the Goulburn community. We recently completed our third successful year at the annual Newcastle 500 V8 Supercars Championship. A highlight of the year for those car enthusiasts among us.
We look forward to the successful completion of the Fowlers Road project for Wollongong City Council, and the Camp Street Bridge Replacement at Forbes project for Transport Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) in 2020.

Abergeldie Underground Sector

It has been a big year for the Abergeldie Underground sector. Most notably our contract with Ghella and Watercare for the Central Interceptor project in New Zealand. Another great project we worked on is the Fortrose Street Rising Main and Jindalee Water Main project for Queensland Urban Utilities in Joint Venture with Obayashi. Awarded as part of our Bulimba Sewer Trunk Main project recently completed for Queensland Urban Utilities, the project was winner of the 2019 Innovation & Sustainability Award in Water at the IPWEAQ Excellence Awards. Tunnelling and pipe jacking were carried out using an Abergeldie owned and operated AVN1500 TBM to overcome some of the complex challenges of this project.

Abergeldie Energy Sector

2019 was also a busy year for projects within the Abergeldie Energy sector, constructing new electrical substations at Chalmers Street and Granville Junction for TfNSW. Granville Substation was proudly the CCF Earth Awards Finalist for 2019 in the category 4 award. The Chalmers Street electrical substation will replace the heritage listed Prince Alfred Substation –– a notable Bradfield design.

Abergeldie Remediation Sector

Our Rehabilitation teams in QLD, VIC and NSW have been busy completing packages of works, most notably our 3-year Sewer Main Renewal Contract with Yarra Valley Water being extended for a further 2 years until 2021. This follows another successful year with over 37km of sewers rehabilitated and 100% of all KPI’s achieved.

 Abergeldie Celebrates Success Together  

The Abergeldie people are dedicated to safety, hard work and leadership. It is for this reason that our people are at the forefront of the successful delivery of our complex infrastructure projects. We would like to congratulate again our Water team on winning the 2019 Sydney Water Delivery Management Award and to Stephen Scanlan for being awarded the Site Supervisor of the Year Award at the CCF NSW People’s Awards in November 2019. A special mention to Greg Taylor for his dedication in supporting the work of WaterAid Australia and the St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies). Alicia Tran deserves a congratulations for being our Young WaterAid Champion of 2019 and leading numerous initiatives to raise funds for WaterAid Australia. Thank you also to the wonderful volunteers who dedicate their free time after work to assist on the Western Sydney Vinnies Van throughout the year. It was also a great help to have our young interns and graduates volunteer at the Vinnies Western Sydney Community Sleepout in August 2019.

We wish to thank our plant team for their hard work in 2019. Without their efforts, it would not be possible to deliver the civil infrastructure projects needed to build better communities.

Congratulations to our Oxfam Trailwalker athletes for successfully completing the Sydney Oxfam Trailwalker 2019; 100km team with Ren Greentree (Team Leader), Michael Doran, Micah Day and Daniel McPherson and the 50km team with Rick Szabo (Team Leader) Matthew Boyle, Denis Quigley and Thomas Bouvy. Both Abergeldie teams crossed the finish line as one whole team and raised over $17,000 for Oxfam Australia. The Abergeldie teams were greatly supported by our colleagues, Edward Farrell, Isabel Nobre, Alicia Tran, Lillian Simpson and outstanding family and friends. We look forward to supporting our first Melbourne Oxfam Trailwalker 100km team when they walk in March of next year.

Lastly, Abergeldie welcomes our new and returning employees. A lot has happened in 2019 but there are still a few projects to complete over the festive season, so stay safe to those of you who are working on these projects. We look forward to celebrating together at the upcoming Christmas party!
